Hello, my name is Janet and I am a blonde. I have been a blonde since August 18, 1975. Long time, eh? Well, it gets even sadder really. I am the type of blonde they write the jokes about. I’m kinda ditzy, silly, and klutzy. I’m not stupid per se, or atleast they tell me I’m not. I have lived my life as a blonde in a world of brunettes. Being the only blonde makes life more interesting and sometimes more confusing.

Let’s look at the issues of living a blonde life in a brunette world. First, everyone always has a new blonde joke to tell you. I do enjoy my share of blonde jokes and most of the punch lines fit me to a T. But sometimes I wonder, where did this whole group of people get such a poor reputation? Because my hair is a different color I am suddenly branded as being a certain type of person? Most of the jokes are fun and cute. Sometimes, though, they are mean and cruel. Or come across that way by the person telling it. It’s like sometimes people just want to hurt you and I wonder why. Why do people feel better by hurting others? From the book learning of psychology I understand it, I just don’t get it on a real life level.

Blondes have more fun. While that may be true, this blonde girl hasn’t. I guess, because we have such a reputation of being flighty and zany we are bound to have more fun. However, real life is equal opportunity . Blonde people have the opportunity to experience the same hurts and rejections. And brunettes have the opportunity to have the same fun-filled experiences.

Blondes are stupid, dumb, or dingy. Ok, I’m dingy. Sometimes I feel dumb and stupid. But on those rare good days, I’m not. However, it is assumed I am. And being the stubborn person that I am, you think I’m stupid I’ll act stupid. If I’m not expected to know anything then I just play along. That way no one ever really expects much. And when I offer up some gem of knowledge I get double credit for having it. Why? Because I have managed, just once, to cross that barrier of my hair color and provide some form of knowledge and wisdom. Had to take me longer than most, right?

Now, don’t get me wrong. Most of the time I enjoy being a blonde. And when I don’t? Well, I just hit the local wally world and bask in some artifical intelligence J . I realize that “blonde” traits exist across every hair color and every gender. But it’s us girl’s that get the rap. Every person on the age fits into some sterotype. You can’t been too thin or too heavy or you get stuck in a predetermined category. Your ethnic heritage, you are judged by that. Where you live. You can be judged for that. And hair color. Even though I don’t have more fun that the average brunette, I usually enjoy being a blonde. Even though I hear every joke out there, most of them are fun natured. And, let’s face it. I am dingy and ditzy. It’s who I am, not because of my hair color. And, well, on a good day I do have more fun. And more blonde moments than there are jokes!

And someday, well hopefully everyone will be proud to be who they were created to be. But until then. Well, blondes can have more fun. Brunettes can be the smart ones. And redheads, well, don’t even get me started there :D

**This is not what I had in mind when the title came to me. I’m not even sure I like it. However, someday, I’ll revisit this title and maybe make it be what I envisioned it to be.**
