When you really break it all down, to the very core of what life is, you realize it’s like a roll of toilet paper. Now, I can already hear the groans and maybe even giggles but keep an open mind. Read with me and explore the possibilities of this statement. Let’s start with the toilet paper as it’s function in life makes more solid sense. Toilet paper is created for a reason. We have it in our lives for a reason. But when the toilet paper has served it’s purpose it’s disposable. With me so far?

Now life. We all have lives, some more exciting and more exotic than others. Some easy, some hard, but we all have them. We all choose (to some degree) how we live our lives. But our lives have a purpose. There is a reason we are here in this place at this time with the people we are with. There is a reason we have the experiences we do. Life is created for a reason. It serves a purpose. And when that purpose is fulfilled we die. We don’t know when we have fulfilled our purpose so we can’t be the ones responsible to chose when we are “disposed” of you might say. Someone else does not know when our purpose is fulfilled so they should not be the ones to chose when we go either. However, those things happen. Think of it as wasting perfectly good toilet paper.

But when we die, sometimes it’s to continue to serve a purpose. No one likes to think about it but let’s face it death is as much a fact of life as the actual living. And when we die it really doesn’t impact us. If I keeled over while tracking down dirty socks to throw in the washer tomorrow I am not going to care. How can I? I’m dead. However, my death may impact those in my life. My death may serve a purpose in the life of someone else. Just as my life hopefully served a purpose in the life of someone else. But well, when I die, it really doesn’t matter anymore. And when I die it means that the reason for my living has served it’s purpose.

When a friend of mine first heard of my toilet paper theory she was like I don’t want to be no toilet paper, I’m the cardboard roll in the middle! And I thought about that for a minute. And I agreed. The cardboard roll in the middle also serves a purpose. It’s the form, the shape, the backbone of the paper that’s attached to it. And we all need that support and shaping in our lives from time to time. We all need someone to be the cardboard tube in the middle. But just like the attached paper, it too serves a purpose and then is discarded. But some people are the paper and some are the cardboard tube. Some are that awful thin paper that breaks so easily and some are that lush triple ply.

So, seek your purpose and live your life. You never know if that purpose is what you thought was obvious or just to blow a nose. Your purpose may be to wipe down the counter or remove some stubborn mascara. Oh wait, sorry, I was talking to the toilet paper there :D To the human’s in the audience. Live your life as though today would be your last. Serve your purpose whatever that might be. You don’t have to know your purpose to serve it. You just have to be who you were created to be. And when it’s time to flush, you and those you leave behind will know that you served your purpose and that you will leave a legacy behind in the life of someone somewhere. You may not even know that your purpose touched them.
